Great Woman No. 3 - DOROTHEA TANNING

birthday by dorothea tanning

DOROTHEA TANNING
* 25.8.1910 Galesburg/Illinios - ✝ 31.1.2012 New York

Max Ernst is  known probably to everyone, but how about Dorothea Tanning?
She was not alone married with him but for 36 years at his side,

and a exceptional (surrealist) artist and indeed in painting, drawing, print and sculpture!

Dorothea was born on 25.8.1910 in Galesburg / Illinois, as second daughter of Amanda and Andrew Tanning. She discovered early on drawing for herself, but her angel with firm small breasts plus nude met with no particular agreement in her conservative family.
"Art school is not a real school, the child is indeed completely overturned, the College will bend her!" So she went obediently to college and learned librarian, where she was constantly surprised while reading the books, instead of  putting the magazines in order, as it would have been her duty. 1930 at age 20, she fled with friends to Chicago and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Arts but remained there only three weeks because she found that she could learn more alone. She prefered  the Chicago Art Institute and studied there for hours the pictures because that was her excellent instruction in painting.

In 1935 she bought a one-way ticket to New York, took a taxi and told the driver he should go to Greenwich Village and  at the first "Room for Rent"  sign she stopped him, paid the rent, let the taxi driver purely carry her suitcase in and was a New Yorker!
There she worked as a freelance commercial artist, for example, for Macy's, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, for 10 drawings she got 100 dollars, which was a small fortune back then.

She continued her studies in painting at the same time. Max Ernst came in the winter of 1942  to take a look at her painting  that she wanted to exhibit in the gallery Art of His Century in the group exhibition "Exhibition by 31 Women". It was a self-portrait and he wanted to know the title, she said it had no title and he said, then call it but "Birthday".
It was love at first sight, Max Ernst divorced from Peggy Guggenheim, with whom he was still married (but that's another story ...)

Together they moved to Sedona in Arizona, where Max built by hand a house and where they had no running water and no electricity at the beginning, they had to get to the water with a canister from the well 7 miles away. Dorothea cooked with a pot on three stones between the cacti. She describes it as a great time with an overwhelming nature, so overwhelming that she preferred to paint interiors, because she found that she could not meet this force of nature.
In 1943 they aceted in the surrealist film "Dreams that money can buy" by Hans Richter.

In October 1946, Max Ernst married Dorothea in a double ceremony with Man Ray and Juliet in Beverly Hills.
1949, they pull together to Paris and Dorothea worked in her studio at her first lithographs.

April 1976.

In 1950 they moved to live in different places in the south of France, up to Max Ernst's death on April 1, 1976.

It took years until 1980 Dorothea finally moved back to New York. Friends portrayed  her as absolutely exceptional, mysterious and totally unpredictable personality that is generous and sociable, full of inexhaustible creative energy. A friend recalls an autumn party hosted in her hotel room to which she collected leaves from the park and distributed on the floor. The maid began to lament, how should she get ever clean this up again, because the leaves ranged people up to the knees, but Dorothea gave her a decent tip and so it was probably no longer a problem!

A woman and an artist with whom I would like to have been a personal friend,
because you seem to have had a lot of fun with her. There was a film on german television which was great...

For everyone else, I can recommend the book "Birthday" by Dorothea Tanning, where she wrote down all the memories of her life with Max Ernst, so she did not forget later about it, as she said. The book itself is just as absolutely unusual and special and I highly recommend it. However, I seem to have thrown away my copy at the last move and must buy now a used copy. How stupid can one bee?!  ☛☹☠

I hope you liked it, what I have presented today, and of course this is only a short and not accurate overview of the life of this extremely talented and unusual woman who has become at least 101 years old! So if you want to know more and see, I recommend the website Dorothea Tanning to view.

All pictures shown here are copyright Dorothea Tanning!

And who has now got the desire, to introduce a great woman by yourself, who may link below! It hasn't to be an artist, it can also be a writer, scientist, inventor, aviator, adventurer or whatever, because in each field  there are also women and superb ones! So likes to participate, can do this every Thursday when I (hopefully) introduce another great wife.

Toll, liebe Barbara! Dein Post also eine echte Wissenserweiterung.
